About Eógan's Wooden Crafts

The two things I remember enjoying most at school was the woodworking class and PE (Physical Education), being in the workshop and outdoors running about was definiely more fun than sitting in a classroom. However, it was my euthuasism for aircraft and aviation that dominated when came to searching for career as I was persuaded that an academic route would provide a future stable income. So therefore I began studying maths and physics which eventually lead to me studying aeronautical engineering and career in the aircraft industry. While I enjoyed learning maths and the physics of flight, I have always been drawn back to doing woodwork in the workshop and running about outdoors. The latter I do through flying helicopters, swimming and a bit of mountaineering if I can find the time.

My intial reintroduction to woodworking was through taking up flying and building model aircraft just before I started university to study aeronautical engineering. I really enjoyed building model aircraft from plans but I started to run into a numbers of problems.

  1. The main one being that I had more fun flying helicopters than fixed wing aircraft, helicopters are more mechanical aircraft and not made from wood!

  2. The other problem was I was running out of space to store all the fixed wing aircraft that I had built but wasn't flying anymore!

  3. The final problem was doing woodwork can be difficult if you do not have a proper workshop, space, etc and my living quarters were generally becoming a more kaotic and stressful place with model aircraft and helicopters, tools, etc laying about everywhere unorganised!

So in future I hope to return to woodworking again, and in a way use the few woodworking skills I have acquired through building model aircraft and other simiplier projects to woodwork my way around these problems! So my intial projects will include space saving woodworking solutions, portable workshop solutions but I also hope to finish off some my unfinished model aircraft projects, and possibly build a eVTOL (combination of helicopter and fixed wing) glider. I also had short experience with dingy sailing so I may even have a go building an RC Sailboat or/and a sailing dingy. However, I probably look at building general woodworking projects as well, which I could possibly sell on.

Skills developed from woodworking also lay the foundation for building anything using metal, composites, etc. A lot of the processes for building something from wood can be used to build something more complex such as helicopter, woodworking is just an easlier, less costly way to learn them. The other advantage it's a very good way of applying mathematics in the real world in very practical way. So I can use the woodworking skills acquired through these woodworking projects to help when I try to build, modfy, repair and operate RC helicopters and UAV eVTOLs.

Please visit the woodworking projects page for a list of projects I have completed to date and if there is anything else woodworking related that you think I can help you with please contact me using email or on Facebook.
